Tesla to Pay $243M in Fatal Autopilot Crash Case
Tesla, Inc. must pay $243 million to the family of a young woman killed in a 2019 crash. The verdict marks a major setback for the electric car giant.
The deadly crash happened in Key Largo, Florida in April 2019. Naibel Benavides Leon, 22, died after a 2019 Tesla Model S hit her. Her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo, survived but suffered severe injuries.
That night, the couple had pulled over to watch the stars. However, their quiet evening turned tragic within seconds.
George McGee drove the Tesla. He later admitted he bent down to grab his phone. As a result, he ran a red light at nearly 70 mph. Then, his car slammed into the couple’s parked Chevrolet Tahoe.
Video from the Tesla’s front camera showed McGee speeding through the intersection. The impact threw Benavides Leon about 75 feet. She died at the scene. Meanwhile, Angulo broke several bones and suffered a traumatic brain injury.
McGee told police he had activated Autopilot. He said he expected the system to help avoid mistakes. However, it did not brake or warn him.
Benavides Leon’s family sued both McGee and Tesla. McGee later settled separately. Still, the case against Tesla moved forward in federal court.
Last August, jurors ruled Tesla partly at fault. They found that the Autopilot system failed to act despite detecting obstacles. According to court records, the vehicle saw a stop sign, a pedestrian, and the parked SUV. Yet, it gave no alert and did not brake.
Tesla argued that Autopilot cannot prevent reckless driving. Company lawyers said the crash could have happened in any vehicle.
However, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom upheld the jury’s decision. She awarded $200 million to be shared between the families. In addition, she granted $19.47 million to each side in further damages.
Angulo later spoke about the crash on 60 Minutes. He said he could not speak to paramedics and felt lucky to be alive.
For Tesla, the ruling raises fresh questions about self-driving technology. For the family, however, the long legal battle has finally ended.
