Super Flu Spreading Across A&B—Doctor Urges Calm and Caution

Super flu is spreading quickly across Antigua and Barbuda, and a local doctor urges residents to stay calm but cautious.

Dr. Courtney Lewis, Vice President of the Antigua and Barbuda Medical Association, said the illness is not COVID-19. Instead, it’s a highly infectious influenza strain, subtype H3N2.

He explained the name “super flu” comes from its ability to infect people rapidly. No country or population seems safe from it.

Dr. Lewis said the virus can bypass usual defenses like flu shots and regular immunity strengthened by vitamins and exercise.

Part of the surge is due to winter tourists arriving from colder climates. Many carry viruses unknowingly and transmit them to locals.

Dr. Lewis emphasized the difference between a cold and the flu. Colds remain mild and limited to the respiratory tract.

By contrast, flu strikes the whole body almost overnight. Patients may feel fine today but severely sick by morning. Severe fatigue, brain fog, and dizziness often follow recovery.

He warned residents against demanding antibiotics immediately. Antibiotics fight bacteria, not viruses, and misuse increases antimicrobial resistance.

Instead, Dr. Lewis advised completing any prescribed antibiotic course fully and avoiding pressure on doctors for viral illnesses.

Treatment mainly focuses on supportive care. Hydration, he said, is the most important factor to avoid serious complications.

“Viruses are very hydrophobic. The more water you drink, the faster you recover,” Dr. Lewis explained. He praised coconut water as a local hydration option but cautioned diabetic patients about its sugar content.

Residents should also eat well, get enough sleep, reduce stress, wash hands often, and wear masks in crowded areas. Most importantly, stay home when sick.

Dr. Lewis stressed that workplaces benefit when sick employees rest. Going to work spreads the virus and worsens illness for everyone.

He recommended residents get an up-to-date flu shot targeting current strains. Last season’s vaccine offers limited protection against H3N2.

Finally, anyone experiencing worsening symptoms, breathing difficulties, or prolonged illness should seek medical attention promptly.

By following these precautions, residents can reduce the spread and impact of super flu across Antigua and Barbuda.
