Snap election set for April 30 in Antigua
Snap elections are now set for April 30, 2026, in Antigua and Barbuda. Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed the date on Tuesday evening. He made the announcement during a rally at his party’s headquarters in St John’s.
At the same time, the constitutional process has begun. The election writ was issued by Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams. As a result, the country now moves into full election mode.
Meanwhile, Nomination Day is fixed for Monday, April 13. This gives candidates a short window to finalize their campaigns.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the vote. He said this election is a defining moment for the nation. Therefore, he urged citizens to prepare early. He also encouraged voters to renew registration cards if needed.
In addition, he called on people to vote early on Election Day. He believes the outcome will shape future development. Thus, he urged voters to make informed decisions.
Earlier, Browne revealed the snap election during a radio appearance. Originally, general elections were due in January 2028. However, this new date brings elections much sooner than expected.
Notably, this will be the second election in just three years. The last general election took place in January 2023. In that vote, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party won 9 of 17 seats. On the other hand, the United Progressive Party secured 8 seats.
