Skerritt Heads Solo to Tokyo for World Championships

Jamaica-based sprinter Darion Skerritt will carry Antigua and Barbuda’s flag alone at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. The 24-year-old athlete, whose personal best in the 200m stands at 20.67 seconds, will compete from 13–21 September 2025 after being offered a universality (wildcard) slot.
Two of Antigua and Barbuda’s top sprinters were originally in line for spots but had to withdraw. Cejhae Greene, the senior national sprinter, declined the wildcard due to a hamstring injury, while Joella Lloyd—who had secured qualification with a national-record 11.01 seconds in the 100m—pulled out because of a shin injury.
Accompanying Skerritt in Tokyo will be coach Jamille Nelson, who also serves as the delegation to the 55th World Athletics Congress. The President of the Antigua and Barbuda Athletic Association (ABAA), Everton Cornelius, will also attend the congress.
Skerritt’s participation ensures that Antigua and Barbuda remains present on the world athletics stage, despite last-minute withdrawals. His opportunity through the universality slot also highlights World Athletics’ efforts to promote inclusive participation. The backing from ABAA leadership and coaches shows the importance placed on keeping the nation represented at major global competitions.
