Sir Molwyn Joseph on Wednesday called for a change in politics in Antigua and Barbuda.

Speaking at a special parliamentary sitting, he honored Sir Robin Yearwood for 50 years of unbroken service.

During his remarks, Joseph urged the opposition to help “arrest the degradation and the false information” undermining the nation’s image. He questioned whether this could signal a “new beginning” and a “new outlook” for politics.

Joseph warned that failing to act could hurt everyone. “We have to stop … because we all will become losers in this country,” he said.

He highlighted Sir Robin’s decades of service, noting that the veteran lawmaker was elected 11 times by the people of St. Philip’s North. Such victories reflected the voluntary will of the electorate, Joseph added.

“For 50 years to represent them in this honorable House,” he said, “is an achievement that cannot be taken for granted.”

Joseph also framed Sir Robin’s tenure within the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s history. He credited the “76ers” with fostering political stability, peace, and togetherness since 1976.

Recalling Sir Robin’s first official win, Joseph noted he received 756 votes compared to 375 for his opponent.

At times, humor softened the tribute. Joseph joked about seeking one of Sir Robin’s goats, a promise that remains unfulfilled, drawing laughter in the chamber.

Yet, he returned to a serious tone, warning the country faces “some of the most difficult periods in our history as small island states.”

Unity remains crucial, Joseph stressed, as Antigua and Barbuda navigates global pressures.

Finally, lawmakers were urged to seize the opportunity of Sir Robin’s milestone. Joseph called on them to elevate the national conversation and advance the country’s interests.
