Sheinbaum Weighs Lawsuit Over Musk Cartel Claim

Sheinbaum

Sheinbaum is considering legal action after comments by Elon Musk. On Tuesday, she said her team is reviewing options. She spoke during her daily press conference.

Earlier, Musk posted remarks on X. He responded to a 2025 video of Sheinbaum discussing cartel violence. In that post, he alleged she was taking cues from cartel bosses. However, he offered no evidence.

In response, Sheinbaum called the claim laughable. Therefore, she asked government lawyers to examine the case. Still, she may face hurdles in US courts. Defamation law strongly protects free speech. As a result, she would need to prove Musk knowingly made false claims. She would also need to show reckless disregard for the truth.

Meanwhile, the dispute followed a major security operation. Mexican forces captured and killed Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho. He led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Authorities tracked him to a forest cabin in Tapalpa, Jalisco.

Soon after, elite army and National Guard troops moved in. A firefight broke out in nearby woods. Gunmen fired rocket launchers at soldiers. Eight people died, including Oseguera. Two injured operatives later died in a helicopter.

Afterward, violence spread across several states. Cartel members set up roadblocks and carried out arson attacks. At least 50 people died in the counteroffensive. Over 130,000 people remain missing nationwide. Much of the violence links to drug trafficking networks.

During the raid, troops seized heavy weapons and vehicles. The US had offered a $15 million bounty for Oseguera. Even so, Sheinbaum stressed that Mexican forces led the mission. She denied any US boots on the ground.

Furthermore, she rejected claims of a return to war tactics. She said a new war on drugs is not an option. Instead, she promised to pursue peace within the law.

In addition, Luisa Alcalde, head of the ruling MORENA party, criticized Musk online. She urged him to fight drug demand and disinformation.

Finally, Sheinbaum praised the armed forces. She said Mexico remains calm and coordinated. Above all, she pledged to guarantee peace and security.
