Serious Crime Drops 10% as Antigua Plans Forensic Bill
Serious crime in Antigua and Barbuda fell by 10% this year, the Governor General announced Thursday. Speaking during the Throne Speech at Parliament, Sir Rodney Williams credited strong leadership within the Royal Police Force and an increased focus on community policing.
He noted that neighbourhood watch programs, expanded foot and vehicle patrols, and proactive law enforcement helped drive the decline. “These results reflect the combined efforts of our officers and community partners,” he said.
Building on these gains, the government plans to introduce legislation in early 2026 to establish the Antigua and Barbuda Forensic Services. The new agency will manage drug analysis and create a dedicated biology and chemistry division. Investigators will gain access to modern scientific tools that are currently unavailable locally, improving the quality and speed of criminal investigations.
Sir Rodney also highlighted plans to expand the Industrial Court by appointing additional judges. This will help resolve labour disputes more efficiently while maintaining transparency and the rule of law. Antigua and Barbuda ranked second in the Caribbean and 38th globally on the 2025 Rule of Law Index, he noted.
Rehabilitation in His Majesty’s Prison will also become a core priority. The government plans to expand skills-training programs and hire correctional officers qualified to teach trades. These initiatives aim to reduce recidivism and support inmates’ reintegration into society after release.
The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force received praise for its role in supporting public safety. Joint patrols and security initiatives with the police have helped curb antisocial behaviour, especially during peak festival periods.
Sir Rodney framed the combined strategy—modern policing, forensic science, and structured rehabilitation—as key to sustaining the country’s improving public-safety outlook. By investing in science-driven investigation, stronger courts, and rehabilitative programmes, Antigua and Barbuda aims to continue reducing crime while strengthening community trust in law enforcement.
The Governor General concluded that these measures position the nation to maintain a safe environment for residents and visitors alike while modernising the criminal justice system for the future.
