Questions grow over evidence in Nigel Christian murder trial

Questions

Questions continue to grow in the murder trial linked to the death of Nigel Christian. Defence lawyers raised new concerns about how investigators handled key evidence.

The trial involves three accused men. They are Saleim Harrigan, Wayne Thomas, and Lasean Bully. Prosecutors say the men abducted and killed Christian in 2020.

During cross-examination, defence attorneys challenged the way police documented several items. As a result, fresh doubts emerged in court.

Attorney Sherfield Bowen questioned a bag that police recovered at Perry Bay. Investigators linked the bag to Christian.

Police said the bag contained tea bags and Swiss chocolate. Christian’s partner later identified those items as belonging to him.

However, the crime scene manager admitted a major gap in his records. He did not list the tea bags in his original written statement.

Earlier testimony suggested he had recorded every item found at the scene. Therefore, the missing detail raised serious questions.

Bowen then pressed the witness further. The officer admitted he never asked the witness how she recognised the items as Christian’s.

Next, attorney Michael Archibald continued the questioning. His cross-examination revealed more problems with the evidence.

For example, the sergeant said he could not remember what the tea bags looked like. In addition, investigators never tested the tea bags or chocolate for DNA.

He also told the court he does not know where those items are now.

Meanwhile, a juror raised another concern during the hearing. The juror asked about the car keys found in Christian’s abandoned truck.

Police discovered the keys in the ignition. However, investigators never checked the keys for fingerprints.

Because of these issues, defence lawyers argued that investigators missed several important forensic steps.

Prosecutors, however, continue to present their case before the court.

The charges stem from events on July 10, 2020. Prosecutors say the accused men took Christian from his home in McKinnons.

Later, authorities discovered his body in Thibou’s. He had suffered a fatal gunshot.

The case continues to draw national attention across Antigua and Barbuda.

The trial will resume on Tuesday as testimony continues.
