Prime Minister Stands Firm on Vending Clean-Up Efforts
Prime Minister Gaston Browne is standing firm on his government’s push to regulate street vending and curb illegal dumping. He said these changes are necessary to keep Antigua and Barbuda clean and safe. Additionally, he argued that the opposition keeps trying to block every attempt to create order.
During the Browne and Browne Show, he explained the government’s plan to reorganize vending areas. These plans focus on beaches and busy commercial zones. The aim, he said, is to improve sanitation, access, and overall safety. However, he noted that every new rule sparks resistance from political opponents.
Across several beaches, vendors have built unapproved stalls and blocked public access. As a result, the government intends to relocate some businesses to safer locations. At Darkwood Beach, for example, vendors will move from the roadside to a designated space across the street. This shift supports business while protecting the coastline.
Furthermore, Browne said the relocation process will not cost vendors anything. He stressed that the government’s goal is improvement, not punishment. Meanwhile, he accused the opposition of encouraging conflict rather than helping address real environmental problems.
Many residents, he added, support the clean-up push. With tourism growing again, people want cleaner beaches and better-managed vending areas. Because of this, the government believes stronger enforcement is essential.
Illegal dumping, makeshift structures, and poor waste habits continue to affect both rural and coastal communities. Therefore, Browne said the administration plans to increase inspections and clean-up operations. The upcoming work includes removing unapproved buildings and clearing roadside clutter.
In spite of criticism, the prime minister said the government will continue its program. He believes organized vending benefits the entire island. “The issue is order,” Browne said, as he reaffirmed his commitment to cleaner public spaces and stronger regulation.
