Prime Minister Invites Observers Ahead of Election Announcement

Prime

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has written to three groups to observe the next general election. Notably, he contacted CARICOM, the OAS, and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

In his letters, Browne said he plans to announce the election date on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Therefore, preparations for the vote are already underway.

Moreover, Browne said the government would welcome an Electoral Observer Mission. He added that all usual courtesies will be given. In other words, observers will receive full support during their visit.

Meanwhile, the election follows the recent dissolution of Parliament. Governor General Sir Rodney Williams took this step. He acted under the Constitution and on Browne’s advice. As a result, the country now moves toward early elections.

Importantly, the vote comes five months before the constitutional deadline. This decision has set the stage for a new political contest.

At the same time, Browne is seeking a fourth consecutive term. Therefore, the stakes are high for the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

However, the main opposition United Progressive Party is expected to challenge strongly. So far, the election looks like a two-party race.

In contrast, the Democratic National Alliance has stepped aside. The party has already said it will not field candidates. Consequently, voters will likely choose between the two major parties.

Looking back, the last general election took place on January 18, 2023. In that vote, the ruling party won nine of the 17 seats. Meanwhile, the opposition and one independent candidate secured the remaining seats.

Now, attention turns to the upcoming announcement. As a result, political activity is expected to increase.

In conclusion, Browne’s request for observers signals a key step. It also highlights the importance of transparency in the electoral process.
