Prime Minister Browne defends $100M road works reserve

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the surge in road construction is not election-season posturing. He spoke on the Browne and Browne program via Pointe Broadcasting Network on Saturday.

Moreover, Browne said the projects mark a historic first for Antigua and Barbuda. Multiple road works are happening simultaneously in every community.

He acknowledged public scrutiny over the pace and timing of the works. However, he stressed the developments are part of a long-term infrastructure plan.

In addition, Browne revealed that the current projects are funded entirely through government cash flow and daily operations.

“We have not touched one cent of that $100 million yet,” Browne said, referring to a bond secured from local banks.

Furthermore, he said this fund ensures construction continues after the elections. “No one should think the roads will stop after the polls,” he explained.

Browne added that the $100 million reserve demonstrates his administration’s commitment. It guarantees ongoing road building, regardless of the political calendar.

He emphasized that these projects show the government’s dedication to long-term growth. Consequently, communities across the islands will see improvements for years.

Meanwhile, Browne said the simultaneous works allow for faster completion and better planning. In addition, the projects create jobs and support local businesses.

The Prime Minister also noted that such an extensive road program has never happened before. Therefore, it represents an unprecedented investment in national infrastructure.

Moreover, he encouraged residents to view the projects as lasting benefits, not just temporary improvements before elections.

He assured the public that planning and financial safeguards protect these initiatives. Furthermore, they will continue smoothly, irrespective of political timelines.

Finally, Browne called on citizens to monitor progress and support long-term development. “This is about building a stronger Antigua and Barbuda for everyone,” he concluded.
