Prime Minister Browne cites global instability for early polls
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says global instability drove him to call early elections. He spoke Tuesday evening at the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party campaign launch at People’s Place.
Moreover, Browne said the April 30 vote ensures government continuity. He stressed it is not a political move to exploit opposition weakness. Instead, it protects Antigua and Barbuda from global crises.
“That is one of the main reasons I called early elections,” Browne told supporters. “We must remain stable during uncertain times.”
He explained that winning a fresh mandate now lets the government focus on external challenges. Otherwise, an upcoming election would distract leaders from urgent issues.
Furthermore, Browne highlighted the ABLP’s success during past crises. “We handled COVID and other emergencies effectively,” he said. “Our team has experience, skill, and commitment.”
In addition, he rejected suggestions that the timing targets the opposition United Progressive Party. He emphasized that his decision serves national interest, not political gain.
“This is about people, stability, and growth,” Browne said. “It is not about power.”
He also warned voters against complacency despite opposition struggles. Therefore, he urged citizens to renew ID cards and vote early on April 30.
“The world today is very unstable,” Browne said. “With wars, inflation, and uncertainty, our country needs steady leadership.”
Meanwhile, Browne dissolved Parliament on April 1. Consequently, Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams issued the writs of election. Nomination day is set for April 13.
Previously, the ABLP won nine of seventeen seats in January 2023. Since then, the party strengthened its position through by-election wins and floor crossings.
Likewise, the UPP confirmed sixteen candidates at its General Council meeting Tuesday night. Then, the party will launch its campaign on April 12. Their theme is “Ignite.”
With elections only weeks away, both parties now enter a busy campaign period. Ultimately, voters will decide who leads Antigua and Barbuda through global uncertainty.
