Police Warn Unlocked Doors Put Homes at Risk
Police are warning residents and business owners about simple security lapses.
The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda says unlocked doors and poor lighting increase crime risks. In addition, careless social media posts can expose properties.
This week, the Community Policing Unit issued detailed safety advice. The goal is to reduce theft and break-ins across Antigua and Barbuda.
First, police stressed that many burglaries happen through unsecured entry points. Therefore, they urge residents to lock all doors and windows at all times. This includes when people are at home.
Moreover, the advisory recommends strong deadbolt locks. Officers also advise using solid-core or metal doors. In addition, sliding doors should have security rods or extra locks.
“Most burglars enter through unlocked doors,” the advisory noted.
Meanwhile, homeowners leaving the island face added risks. Police warn against posting travel plans on social media. Such posts can signal that a home is empty.
Instead, residents should tell a trusted neighbor. They should also arrange for mail collection. Furthermore, they must secure all entry points before departure.
Police also highlighted the need for clear visibility. Overgrown bushes and trees can provide cover for criminals. Therefore, residents should trim vegetation near windows. They should also keep yards tidy and remove hiding spots.
Lighting, however, remains a strong deterrent. Officers recommend outdoor lights at front and back entrances. They also suggest lighting along property perimeters. Motion-sensor lights offer added protection.
In addition, security cameras and alarm systems can discourage crime. These tools provide early warning of suspicious activity.
Business owners must take extra steps. Police advise limiting cash kept on site. Funds should go into safes. Moreover, owners should avoid leaving money in registers overnight. They should also avoid counting cash in public view.
Staff training also matters. Employers should ensure workers stay alert. Employees must understand emergency procedures. They should follow strict opening and closing routines.
Whenever possible, business operators should not open or close alone. They must remain alert for suspicious persons nearby.
Finally, police stressed community cooperation. Neighbors should build strong relationships. They should join neighborhood watch efforts. Most importantly, they must report suspicious activity quickly.
The advisory forms part of ongoing community policing efforts. Police aim to boost awareness and reduce preventable crime.
