Police K-9 unit in Antigua and Barbuda will expand with four new dogs, Cabinet announced Friday.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the move strengthens crime prevention and boosts public safety.

“The Cabinet approved a recommendation from the Attorney General and Minister responsible for the police to acquire four additional dogs,” Merchant said.

The new dogs will include two trained for firearm detection, one for narcotics, and one for explosives. Each dog will undergo specialized training along with its handler.

Once integrated, the K-9 unit will total 15 dogs. Consequently, the force’s operational capacity will grow significantly. Merchant said the expansion will improve law enforcement response and deter crime across the country.

“The additions will support crime-fighting efforts by detecting firearms, explosives, and illicit substances,” he added.

The enhanced unit will play a key role in border security operations. It will also assist targeted crime investigations and routine policing activities. Therefore, officers expect quicker detection and safer interventions.

Merchant emphasized that the expansion is part of the government’s broader public safety strategy. He said, “The enhanced K-9 unit will improve public safety, strengthen law enforcement response, and serve as a deterrent to criminal activity.”

The new capabilities allow the unit to respond faster to threats. Additionally, the specialized dogs provide expertise that human officers cannot replicate alone.

Authorities say the firearm and explosives detection dogs will be particularly useful at ports, airports, and public events. Narcotics detection dogs will help combat drug-related crime in communities.

Furthermore, the expansion demonstrates the government’s commitment to modernizing policing resources. It also shows a proactive approach to preventing crime before incidents occur.

Officials expect the full integration of the new dogs and handlers within a few months. Training programs will ensure the dogs perform at peak efficiency.

Overall, the expansion of the K-9 unit strengthens Antigua and Barbuda’s ability to maintain law and order. Citizens can expect safer streets and more effective policing.

The government plans to continue investing in law enforcement resources to support officers and protect the public.
