Police Confirm Chantel Alert System Active, Urge Drivers to Follow Traffic Signals
Police have confirmed that the Chantel Alert System is now fully operational to help locate missing children.
According to officials, the system uses the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) to send urgent information quickly across multiple platforms. Therefore, alerts may appear on phones, social media, and sometimes as text messages. Commissioner Everton Jeffers said, “The information is relayed and digitally sent immediately after a disappearance is verified.”
The initiative is designed to reduce delays and mobilize the public instantly. Police hope this approach will improve recovery rates and ensure swift action in critical situations.
Meanwhile, road safety concerns continue to grow. Authorities have observed drivers ignoring traffic signals at major intersections, especially Long Street and Independence Drive. Deputy Commissioner Albert Wade stressed that flashing red lights must be treated as stop signals.
“Both sides are flashing red, meaning drivers must take the same precautions,” Wade explained. He added, “Motorists must slow down and stop. Do not assume you have the right of way, because collisions will happen.”
Furthermore, officials addressed debates about traffic lights’ efficiency. Some drivers argue traffic flows better when lights are off, yet no data currently supports removing signals. Therefore, the department urges caution and courtesy toward drivers on by-roads, who often wait longer when signals are ignored.
Police emphasize that the Chantel Alert System and traffic safety measures work hand-in-hand to protect citizens. By following signals and paying attention to alerts, the public can help prevent accidents and aid in child recovery efforts.
Authorities encourage everyone to stay vigilant, obey traffic laws, and watch for system notifications. This dual focus on safety and rapid alert response aims to strengthen public security across Antigua and Barbuda.
