PM Urges Supermarkets to Stop Price Gouging

PM

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has urged supermarkets in Antigua and Barbuda to stop price gouging.
He warned the government could act if the practice continues.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show, Browne gave a clear example.
He cited a small pack of grapes being sold for about EC$27.
He called the price “totally inappropriate.”

Furthermore, he said the Ministry of Trade and Price Control has been asked to investigate.
Browne stressed that the issue is serious.

He also expressed concern that prices have increased despite government measures.
Specifically, the measures aimed to reduce the cost of importing fruits and vegetables.

Moreover, he appealed to supermarkets, especially larger retailers, to review their pricing.
He urged them to cooperate with government policy.

Browne emphasized that legal or punitive action is not the preferred option.
Instead, he wants supermarkets to comply voluntarily.

Finally, the prime minister said the government seeks compliance with the law.
He wants fair prices for consumers rather than court action.
