PM Touts New Cruise Terminal as Tourism Gateway
PM Gaston Browne has welcomed the completion of the new cruise terminal.
He described it as critical to national tourism development.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Browne expressed satisfaction.
He said the terminal marks a major milestone.
According to the Prime Minister, the project expands cruise infrastructure.
Moreover, it supports plans for a marquee tourism product.
“This is part of the expansion of our cruise tourism infrastructure,” Browne said.
He added that the goal is a leading Caribbean cruise product.
Additionally, Browne said the terminal will rank among the region’s best.
This will happen as shops and kiosks are completed.
As a result, more opportunities will emerge for residents.
These include opportunities in commerce.
They also include opportunities in the creative arts.
Performers, he said, will use the space at times.
At the same time, employment opportunities will increase.
Browne said jobs have already been created.
Several Antiguans and Barbudans now operate the terminal.
Furthermore, more jobs are expected soon.
These will come as amenities become operational.
Therefore, economic benefits will continue to grow.
The Prime Minister also outlined the development structure.
The project is a partnership with Global Ports Holding.
GPH provides capital and expertise.
Meanwhile, the government provides concessions and land.
Browne said the model works well.
He added it could benefit other Caribbean states.
Looking ahead, Browne discussed plans for Barbuda.
He said Barbuda will target luxury cruise tourism.
Importantly, mass cruise tourism is not the focus.
Instead, the goal is high-end travelers.
These travelers arrive on small yachts and cruise boats.
Browne said cabins can cost about US$25,000 per head.
Accordingly, GPH has been invited to Barbuda.
The company may establish a dedicated facility there.
In addition, the government is developing Barnacle Point.
The area will serve as a premium cruise destination.
Luxury travelers will enjoy water sports and fine dining.
Thus, the tourism offering will diversify.
Meanwhile, Browne addressed environmental concerns.
He called on citizens to keep the country clean.
He cited indiscriminate dumping and derelict homes.
Authorities, he said, are addressing these issues.
This includes demolishing derelict structures.
Beautification of public spaces is also underway.
Finally, Browne spoke about shared responsibility.
He said the government invests heavily in people.
This includes education and healthcare.
In return, citizens must provide good service.
They must also protect the environment.
Browne said the aim is a pristine country.
He added that residents should earn good incomes.
They should meet family and household obligations.
