PM Reports Record $3.7M Customs Revenue

PM

PM Gaston Browne has announced that Antigua and Barbuda’s Customs recorded its highest single-day revenue ever, a milestone he attributes to improved oversight and reduced leakages at the country’s main port.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show, the Prime Minister revealed that Customs collected EC$3.7 million on Monday, marking a record performance. He said the figure reflects the impact of recent administrative adjustments and signals that reforms are starting to deliver results.

“So do you know our record collection was last Monday, $3.7 million,” Browne said. “We never, ever touch anything close to that. The record collection at Customs.”

Revenue Boost Linked to Port Oversight

Browne explained that the surge in revenue comes from strengthened monitoring and stricter controls at the port. For years, Customs had underperformed relative to its potential. He said the latest results show the government is closing gaps that previously allowed losses and ensuring the country gets real value for money.

The announcement comes as the government plans major upgrades to the port to handle rising cargo volumes and attract interest from international shipping firms. Browne emphasized that efficient port operations will be key to capitalizing on growing regional transshipment activity.

Calls for Business-Focused Management

During the programme, Sir Molwyn Joseph urged the government to adopt a business-focused approach to port management. He said the port should evolve into a major revenue centre, tracking expected yields based on cargo volume and detecting anomalies immediately.

Joseph noted that Customs’ record day highlights previously untapped potential. He recommended closer attention to port security, cargo movement controls, and managerial oversight to ensure predictable daily revenue outcomes.

“The government should look closely at the management to ensure stronger accountability and consistent performance,” Joseph said.

The discussion underscores the importance of strategic port management as Antigua and Barbuda positions itself for growth in regional trade and shipping activities.
