PM Opens Door for Public Servants to Claim Lost Wages From COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate

PM Gaston Browne has announced that public servants can now claim wages lost during the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. This ends a long-standing dispute from the pandemic.

The mandate, introduced in mid-2021, required public-sector employees to be vaccinated as COVID-19 cases rose. Similarly, some private-sector workers in high-risk roles were also included. Workers who refused the vaccine were instructed to stay home without pay.

Now, Browne says these employees can submit their information to the Permanent Secretary in their respective ministries. Subsequently, payment vouchers will be processed to reimburse them for lost wages. However, officials have not provided a timeline for disbursement.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this move represents a first step in officially compensating affected workers. Furthermore, it reflects the government’s acknowledgment of the financial impact the mandate caused on many households.
