PM Launches High-Tech Camera Network to Fight Crime and Litter
PM Gaston Browne announced a new national camera network across Antigua and Barbuda to fight crime, littering, and traffic violations. He said about 200 cameras will be installed at key locations.
Moreover, Browne explained that the network will allow law enforcement to monitor illegal activity in real time. “These cameras are not only for crime and violence but also to catch littering,” he said.
Additionally, the Prime Minister confirmed that the government has already made a substantial deposit for the project. He called the investment essential for both policing and environmental enforcement.
Illegal dumping has become hard to manage because people often do not report violations. Browne emphasized that the cameras will help capture offenders automatically. “We are placing cameras in areas where violations frequently occur,” he explained.
Furthermore, the cameras will be linked directly to enforcement officers. Officials can immediately identify offenders and take action without delay. Browne stressed, “We will continue to penalize those who litter indiscriminately.”
He added that keeping Antigua and Barbuda clean is a top priority. “Our country must remain beautiful, and we will not relent on this,” he said.
In addition to cameras, the government will remove derelict buildings and abandoned vehicles. Officials will enforce beach vending regulations and increase fines for environmental offenses. These efforts aim to create cleaner and safer communities.
The first phase of the camera network will begin after an on-site technical assessment. Officials expect it to become operational shortly afterward. Browne concluded that this is part of a broader strategy to modernize law enforcement and protect public spaces.
Finally, the government plans to continue monitoring and upgrading the system. It will ensure both crime prevention and environmental management remain effective nationwide. Citizens are encouraged to cooperate to maintain safe and clean streets.
