PM Browne urges ABCAS students to seize opportunities
PM Gaston Browne urged students to take full advantage of new opportunities. He spoke during a visit to the Antigua and Barbuda College of Advanced Studies.
Firstly, the engagement took place at the Sir Alister Francis Campus on Thursday. There, Browne encouraged students to aim higher in both academics and culture.
Moreover, he reflected on his own experience as a student. He said access to higher education was once very limited.
At that time, many students faced barriers. Only top performers or those with financial support could advance.
However, Browne said conditions have improved. His administration now offers about 2,000 scholarships each year.
Therefore, he urged students to use these opportunities wisely. Education, he stressed, can improve lives and strengthen the country.
“We are providing opportunities for our people to level up,” Browne said. He added that citizens must strive for higher standards.
In addition, he called for stronger community values. Students, he said, should help keep communities clean and safe.
Furthermore, Browne highlighted the importance of soft skills. He pointed to discipline, cultural awareness, and personal growth.
These skills, he explained, support long-term success. They also help shape responsible citizens.
Meanwhile, he noted major government investment in culture. Over $25 million has gone into redeveloping the National Performing Arts Centre.
This facility, formerly the Deluxe Cinema, will support creative expression. It will also help young people develop artistic talents.
Despite its size, Antigua and Barbuda continues to host major global events. For example, the country hosted the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States.
It also hosted the Organization of American States General Assembly.
Looking ahead, the nation plans to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting later this year.
Therefore, Browne urged students to prepare for these opportunities. Education and discipline, he said, remain key.
Finally, he encouraged students to focus on growth and purpose. He believes young people can shape the nation’s future through hard work and commitment.
