PM Browne Orders $2.5M Defamation Lawsuit
PM Gaston Browne has moved to file a major defamation lawsuit. He is seeking a $2.5 million settlement.
On Thursday, Browne confirmed he has instructed attorney Warren Cassel to act. He met Cassel at his office earlier in the day. However, he said the visit was not a simple courtesy call. Instead, he gave formal instructions to begin legal action.
Browne said the lawsuit will target political opponents and a media outlet. Specifically, he named Croif Emmanuel, Joan, and Crusader Radio. He also referred to members of the United Progressive Party, known as the UPP.
Moreover, Browne stated the action includes claims on behalf of Lady Maria Browne. He accused the named individuals and entities of defamation. However, he did not detail the exact statements involved.
“I have requested a settlement of $2.5M,” Browne wrote on social media. In addition, he used strong language to describe his opponents. He ended his post with a warning. “Don’t violate the Rasta Dreadman – Seen!!” he wrote.
Meanwhile, political tensions remain high. Public exchanges between government officials and opposition figures have grown sharper. In recent weeks, many of these disputes have played out online and on radio programs. As a result, the political climate has become more heated.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s move signals a serious escalation. Legal action could shift the battle from public debate to the courtroom. If filed, the case may draw significant public interest.
So far, there has been no immediate response. Croif Emmanuel has not issued a statement. Joan has also remained silent. Crusader Radio has not publicly commented. Likewise, the United Progressive Party has not responded.
Nevertheless, the announcement has already sparked discussion. Supporters say Browne has the right to defend his name. Critics, however, argue that public officials must expect scrutiny.
For now, the matter appears headed toward formal legal proceedings. More details may emerge once the claim is filed. Until then, the country watches closely as political tensions continue to rise.
