Over 7,800 cruise passengers flood Antigua in single day
Over 7,800 cruise passengers arrived in Antigua on Monday, bringing a major boost to the capital.
Four cruise ships docked at St John’s Harbour during the day. As a result, streets, shops, and tour sites saw heavy activity.
According to figures from the Antigua Cruise Port, the largest vessel was Mein Schiff 2. It arrived with about 2,800 passengers. Meanwhile, AIDAsol followed closely with roughly 2,400 visitors.
In addition, the Queen Elizabeth and Azamara Quest also docked. Together, those two ships added nearly 2,600 more passengers to the day’s total.
Because of the large influx, businesses across St John’s reported a very busy day. Taxi drivers, in particular, saw steady demand from early morning. Likewise, tour operators moved visitors quickly to island attractions.
Shop owners and restaurants also benefited from the surge. Many reported increased foot traffic throughout the day. Consequently, the capital experienced a noticeable economic lift.
Port officials welcomed the strong turnout. They noted that cruise tourism continues to trend upward. Therefore, expectations for the season remain high.
Officials also confirmed that 98 cruise calls are scheduled for December. This figure already exceeds the total recorded during the same period last year. As a result, Antigua’s cruise season is shaping up to be one of its strongest.
Moreover, the steady flow of ships reinforces Antigua and Barbuda’s role in the Eastern Caribbean cruise market. The destination remains popular with major cruise lines.
Authorities said the sector continues to support jobs and small businesses. From drivers to vendors, many locals depend on cruise arrivals for income. Thus, strong passenger numbers bring widespread benefits.
Additionally, port officials said ongoing improvements at the cruise port have helped attract more vessels. These upgrades have enhanced passenger flow and visitor experience.
Tourism officials see the numbers as a positive sign heading into the peak season. They believe continued cruise growth will strengthen the wider economy.
Overall, Monday’s arrivals highlighted the importance of cruise tourism. With thousands visiting in a single day, Antigua once again showed its appeal as a leading cruise destination.
