One Hundred Ghanaian Nurses Arrive to Support Public Healthcare
One Hundred and Twenty Ghanaian Nurses to Boost Antigua and Barbuda Health System Next Weekend
Arrival of Nurses
One hundred and twenty nurses from Ghana will arrive in Antigua and Barbuda on January 23, 2026. This step aims to relieve staffing shortages in the public healthcare system.
Government Announcement
Maurice Merchant, Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed the news during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing. He said Cabinet welcomed the nurses’ arrival.
Deployment Plans
The nurses will serve at Celeste Bird Medical Centre, community clinics, schools, and other health institutions. Most of them are experienced professionals.
Impact on Local Staff
These additional staff are expected to ease pressure on current healthcare workers. Antigua and Barbuda continues to lose nurses to overseas recruitment.
Merchant explained, “Our nurses migrate weekly. Other countries recruit them because of their high qualifications.” Therefore, the Ghanaian nurses will help maintain service delivery.
Part of a Larger Strategy
The recruitment forms part of a contract between Antigua and Barbuda and Ghana. Training local nurses remains another key element of government strategy.
For example, the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus is training local nurses to build long-term capacity. The government’s goal remains self-sufficiency in healthcare staffing.
Urgency and Need
Merchant emphasized, “There is a shortage. We must act now to ensure the health system meets public needs.” Immediate intervention is necessary to keep services running.
The arrival of Ghanaian nurses will strengthen the public health system. In addition, this initiative supports the government’s longer-term strategy to stabilize healthcare staffing.
