New Medical Benefits Pharmacy Opens at Glanvilles Polyclinic
New pharmacy services are now available at the Glanvilles Polyclinic. The facility will serve residents in Antigua’s eastern communities.
The pharmacy operates under the Medical Benefits Scheme. Officials held a commissioning ceremony on Tuesday.
Officials Attend Opening
Several government and health leaders attended the event. Among them was Molwyn Joseph.
Also present were Michael Joseph and Lionel Hurst.
Other attendees included Kevin Silston, Marsha Joseph, and Kamaria DeCastro.
Senior technical officers from the Ministry of Health also joined the ceremony.
Easier Access to Medication
During the event, Minister Joseph highlighted the importance of the new pharmacy.
He explained that the facility will improve access to medication for patients in eastern Antigua.
Previously, many patients travelled to St. John’s to collect prescriptions.
Now, patients visiting the Glanvilles Polyclinic can receive their medication on-site.
As a result, the change will save time and travel costs for many residents.
Support for Elderly and Chronic Patients
The minister also stressed the benefits for elderly patients.
In addition, people living with chronic illnesses will gain easier access to treatment.
These conditions include hypertension and diabetes.
Such patients often need regular medication. Therefore, closer pharmacy services will help maintain consistent treatment.
Expanding Community Healthcare
Officials say the pharmacy reflects a wider government strategy.
The plan aims to strengthen primary healthcare and bring services closer to communities.
Therefore, authorities continue to expand medical services outside the capital.
Another pharmacy opened at the Villa Polyclinic in June 2025.
That facility improved access for residents in surrounding areas.
Training Local Pharmacy Staff
Minister Joseph also discussed workforce development.
The government restarted the national pharmacy training programme in 2017.
The programme had previously ended in 2010.
Since its return, it has trained about 30 professionals.
These workers now support the growing healthcare system.
Serving Eastern Communities
The Glanvilles pharmacy will benefit several communities.
Residents from Glanvilles, Pares, Seatons, and Willikies can now collect medication nearby.
The pharmacy will operate Monday to Friday.
Opening hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Patients attending the clinic will also receive same-day prescription service.
