New Law Boosts Property Tax Collection
A new law in Antigua and Barbuda gives the government more power to collect unpaid property taxes. The Tax Administration and Procedure Amendment Bill of 2025 aims to improve how taxes on land and buildings are enforced. It also targets properties that have been neglected or left abandoned.
Senator Shenella Govia explained that the law updates previous rules to fit the country’s current needs. Now, properties with unpaid taxes can be officially registered. This helps the government track and secure tax debts more fairly and clearly.
The new rules also make the sale of seized properties more transparent. Sales must be done through public auctions or sealed bids. Notices about these sales must appear in government publications and newspapers.
This law aims to make sure everyone pays their fair share and that abandoned properties are dealt with effectively. It shows the government’s focus on strengthening tax collection to improve public finances.
