Near-Record Cold Nights Bring Chilly Conditions to Antigua
Near-record cold nights affected Antigua and Barbuda over the past several days, meteorological officials confirmed. Temperatures dropped well below seasonal averages, creating unusually cool overnight conditions across the country.
According to the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services, minimum temperatures ranged from 14°C to 23°C. These readings equal about 57°F to 73°F. As a result, many residents reported noticeably colder nights.
Director of Meteorological Services Dale C. S. Destin explained that such temperatures are rare but not unprecedented. However, he noted that the past two nights came close to historic lows. In particular, comparisons with long-term data showed significant departures from normal December conditions.
Importantly, the V. C. Bird International Airport serves as the main reference site for temperature records. This is because the country lacks long-term climate data from multiple inland or elevated locations. Therefore, officials rely heavily on the airport’s continuous dataset.
Using that dataset, minimum temperatures of 18.1°C were recorded on December 27. Meanwhile, a low of 18.8°C followed on December 28. Consequently, both readings ranked as the second coldest ever recorded on those dates. Officials confirmed that these nights now stand among the coldest December nights at the airport.
Furthermore, the cool spell extended beyond coastal areas. Higher and more exposed communities experienced even lower nighttime temperatures. As a result, residents in those areas felt the cold more intensely.
Meteorological officials emphasized that the cold conditions should not last long. Even so, they urged residents to remain cautious. In particular, elderly individuals should take steps to stay warm at night. Likewise, parents were advised to ensure children remain properly covered.
Additionally, officials encouraged residents to limit overnight exposure to cold air. Simple measures, such as wearing warm clothing indoors, can help reduce discomfort. Moreover, people in elevated areas should monitor temperature updates closely.
Although Antigua and Barbuda typically enjoys warm tropical weather, officials noted that cooler periods can still occur. Therefore, public awareness remains important during unusual weather events.
Overall, meteorologists will continue monitoring conditions closely. Updates will follow if temperatures drop further. For now, officials advise residents to stay informed and take basic precautions during the remaining cool nights.
