Minister Brown Unveils $130K Homes and 2026 Infrastructure Plan
Minister Maria Bird Browne unveiled plans for 2026 infrastructure and housing projects on Friday. She aims to expand affordable housing, improve roads, and enhance drainage.
First, Browne outlined a new $130,000 home model. She said the initiative will help first-time and lower-income buyers achieve homeownership. The homes form part of a broader national housing strategy.
Additionally, Browne presented a national infrastructure upgrade program. The reconstruction of All Saints Road is a key priority. Authorities contracted a North American company paired with a local firm. Survey and assessment teams are already working along the 11-mile corridor from Market Street to English Harbour.
Furthermore, the minister emphasized drainage improvements. She said heavy rainfall still causes flooding, even in well-drained areas. The ministry mapped major waterways and will upgrade drains linked to St. John’s Harbour and eastern coastal zones.
Moreover, Browne highlighted community recreation upgrades. Basketball and volleyball courts will be resurfaced, and public spaces will gain new equipment. The projects aim to improve youth engagement and strengthen community infrastructure.
Government building renovations are also on the agenda. This includes maintenance and upgrades for civil servant accommodations and public facilities. Browne described 2026 as “a big year” for her ministry.
During the briefing, Cabinet spokesman Maurice Merchant addressed recent political criticism. He said Browne discovered and resolved a government vehicle issue without Cabinet authorization. Merchant described the attacks as unwarranted and politically motivated. He added that the Cabinet will defend Browne’s integrity and record.
In conclusion, the ministry’s 2026 agenda combines housing, road construction, drainage, recreation, and public building upgrades. Browne’s plans focus on making communities more livable and modern. Residents can expect tangible improvements throughout the islands.
The minister also urged public support for the initiatives. She emphasized collaboration with local contractors, foreign partners, and community stakeholders. Overall, the agenda reflects a clear vision for growth, resilience, and accessible housing in Antigua and Barbuda.
