Millions in building materials are now reaching needy households across Antigua. The government has started distributing lumber under its housing aid programme. On Friday, workers delivered materials to a vulnerable homeowner in English Harbour.

The initiative targets seniors, people with disabilities, and struggling families. Officials say it aims to improve housing conditions islandwide. Therefore, deliveries will continue in phases.

Rodan Turner, Minister for Social and Urban Transformation, monitored the process. He oversaw the loading and dispatch of lumber from storage. Meanwhile, E. P. Chet Greene, Member of Parliament for St. Paul, observed the delivery in the community.

The first beneficiary, Mrs. Sebastian, qualified under the programme guidelines. She said she lacked the funds to repair her home. As a result, she welcomed the government’s support. She thanked Greene for advocating on her behalf. She also expressed gratitude on behalf of her children and grandchildren.

“I know that he would come through for me,” she said. She added that she hopes the repairs will be completed soon.

Greene described the effort as a major social intervention. He said the programme stands among the government’s most important initiatives. In particular, he pointed to the hardships faced by seniors and disabled residents. He also noted the strain on low-income households.

Furthermore, Turner said the ministry is closely tracking each delivery. He stressed that officials want materials to reach approved recipients quickly. At the same time, the ministry is ensuring accountability.

Officials confirmed that more deliveries are scheduled. The rollout will continue across Antigua in the coming weeks. Consequently, more vulnerable residents should receive support soon.
