Mia Mottley Takes Center Stage Ahead of COP30, with Caribbean Unity in Focus

Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley is gearing up for a leading role at COP30, set to be held in Belém, Brazil, in 2025. Known globally for her powerful advocacy on climate justice and financing for vulnerable nations, Mottley is expected to bring renewed momentum to small island developing states (SIDS), including Antigua and Barbuda, as the Caribbean continues to push for fairer climate policies.

Under her leadership, Mottley has championed the Bridgetown Initiative—a reform agenda aimed at transforming the global financial system to make it more responsive to countries most affected by climate change. Her efforts have drawn international praise and placed the Caribbean region, including nations like Antigua and Barbuda, at the forefront of global climate negotiations.

As COP30 approaches, Caribbean leaders are aligning their positions on climate finance, resilience, and adaptation strategies. Antigua and Barbuda, which has also been an active voice in climate diplomacy, is expected to support the regional call for equitable access to funding and the inclusion of loss and damage measures to protect island economies.
