Man Suffers Stroke After Excessive Energy Drink Use

Man

Man, 54, suffered a stroke and permanent damage after consuming excessive energy drinks. He was healthy, fit, and an avid runner.

He did not smoke, drink alcohol, or use drugs. Yet suddenly, he experienced left-sided weakness, numbness, and balance issues. Concerned family members rushed him to a nearby stroke clinic.

Doctors discovered his blood pressure was dangerously high — 254 over 150 millimeters of mercury. “He looked well, but hypertension is the silent killer,” said Dr. Sunil Munshi of Nottingham University Hospitals.

Scans revealed a stroke in the deeper part of his brain, the thalamus. He faced difficulties walking, swallowing, and speaking. Physicians admitted him and used five medications to lower his blood pressure to 170.

Back at home, his blood pressure climbed again, reaching 220. Doctors ran extensive tests but found no initial cause. Eventually, the man revealed his energy drink habit.

He consumed eight energy drinks daily — two cans at four different times. Each drink contained 160 milligrams of caffeine, totaling around 1,200–1,300 milligrams daily. For comparison, tea contains 30 milligrams, coffee 90 milligrams, and UK guidelines recommend 400 milligrams daily.

After stopping energy drinks, his blood pressure returned to normal. Years later, he remains healthy but lives with stroke aftermath, including numbness in his left hand, arm, leg, and foot.

Doctors said energy drinks contain more than caffeine. Ingredients like taurine, guarana, and ginseng can boost blood pressure, affect metabolism, and damage blood vessels. High glucose levels also increase heart risks.

“Caffeine plus taurine produces higher blood pressure than caffeine alone,” said Munshi. Platelet aggregation in combination with sugar can trigger blood clots and strokes.

Medical literature confirms multiple cases of energy drink-related cardiac events, including atrial fibrillation, brain hemorrhage, and strokes. Dr. Munshi urges doctors to ask about energy drink use during checkups.

He also calls for increased regulation and awareness campaigns. “These drinks are more potent and dangerous than before,” he said. “Public education is critical to prevent harm.”
