Jamaican Students Flee Cuba Amid Growing Crisis

Jamaican students studying in Cuba have begun returning home as conditions on the island continue to deteriorate amid a deepening economic and fuel crisis. The development follows growing concerns about shortages of electricity, transportation, food supplies, and essential services affecting daily life.

Jamaica’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade confirmed that arrangements were being made to facilitate the safe return of students enrolled in medical and other programmes. Officials said the decision was taken in light of the worsening situation in Cuba and out of concern for the welfare of the students.

Parents had reportedly raised alarms about the impact of extended blackouts, limited fuel availability, and disruptions to academic schedules. The government said it is working to ensure that returning students are supported and that discussions are ongoing regarding the continuation of their studies.

Cuba has been facing mounting economic pressure, with severe fuel shortages contributing to widespread service interruptions. Jamaican authorities said they will continue monitoring the situation while prioritising the safety and well-being of their nationals.
