Hundreds Feared Dead After Mediterranean Crossing Amid Cyclone

Hundreds of migrants are feared dead after several boats attempting to cross the Mediterranean were caught in severe weather linked to Cyclone Harry. The vessels were reportedly travelling from North Africa toward southern Europe when they encountered dangerous seas and strong winds.

Rescue agencies say multiple boats capsized or went missing as conditions rapidly worsened. Survivors described overcrowded vessels, limited safety equipment, and panic as waves grew higher. Search and rescue teams have recovered some bodies, while many others are still unaccounted for.

Humanitarian organisations have described the incident as one of the deadliest so far this year and are urging European authorities to strengthen search-and-rescue operations. They also renewed calls for safer and legal migration pathways to reduce the risks faced by people fleeing conflict, poverty, and instability.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of irregular migration across the Mediterranean, particularly during extreme weather events, and has sparked renewed debate about regional responsibility and migrant protection.
