Homeowner Forced to Open Safe in Mill Reef Trial
Homeowner testimony continued Wednesday in the High Court.
A U.S. national said attackers forced him to open his safe at knifepoint. He said they bound him with duct tape during the ordeal.
The case centers on Marlon Carr of Fort Road. He faces three counts of aggravated robbery. The charges relate to an April 6, 2022 attack at the Mill Reef Club.
The judge-alone trial is before Justice Ann Marie Smith. Ann Marie Smith is presiding over the matter. Meanwhile, one former co-accused is serving eight and a half years. That individual pleaded guilty. However, authorities dropped charges against another accused person.
According to evidence, three masked men carried out the attack. They were armed with knives. The victims were a married couple and their female houseguest. All three were in their seventies.
The group had just returned from a party. However, the men confronted them inside the property. The attackers stole jewellery, cash, and electronic devices. The items were worth more than US$11,000.
The male homeowner told the court the men knew about a safe. He said they marched him to it. Then, they ordered him to enter the code while he was bound.
When the safe opened, the men took cash and jewellery. After they left, he freed himself. He then freed the two women. Soon after, he alerted club management.
Meanwhile, his wife also gave evidence. She said the men forced her to open a separate safe. After that, they bound her as well.
Earlier, the houseguest testified. She said one attacker grabbed her around the neck. She also lost jewellery during the robbery.
In addition, an officer read a statement linked to Carr. In it, Carr admitted driving others to the property. He also admitted helping restrain a victim. However, he claimed he was unarmed. He further claimed he refused a share of the stolen items.
Under cross-examination, the defence raised another issue. The lawyer suggested the attackers had inside knowledge of the property.
The trial will continue next week.
