Gunmen Raid Northern Nigerian Village, Kill at Least 30

Gunmen

Gunmen raided Kasuwan-Daji village in northern Nigeria’s Niger state on Saturday evening. At least 30 villagers were killed, police said Sunday.

Firstly, the attackers stormed the village in Borgu local government area. They opened fire on residents and destroyed the local market. Several houses were also set ablaze, according to Niger state police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun.

Moreover, two residents claimed the death toll could be as high as 37. They said some people remained missing as of Sunday. Survivors fear going to recover the bodies.

Meanwhile, Rev. Fr. Stephen Kabirat, spokesman for the Catholic Church of Kontagora Diocese, reported that over 40 people were killed. He added that some abducted victims were children.

In addition, a resident said the gunmen had been lurking around nearby communities for about a week. The attack reportedly lasted up to three hours. Consequently, fear remains high among villagers.

Furthermore, the resident said security forces have not arrived, despite police claims that officers were deployed to search for the kidnapped. As a result, survivors remain trapped and unsafe.

Such attacks are common in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country. Dozens of gangs often target remote communities with limited security presence. Consequently, villagers remain vulnerable to violent raids.

Additionally, Saturday’s raid occurred near Papiri community. That area witnessed the kidnapping of over 300 schoolchildren and teachers from a Catholic school in November.

Police said the attackers came from the National Park Forest along Kabe district. This points to a recurring pattern where gangs use abandoned forest reserves as hideouts. Therefore, large forests continue to pose security challenges.

Finally, the attack highlights ongoing instability in Niger state. Villagers are traumatized, homes destroyed, and families displaced. Security forces face challenges reaching remote communities quickly.

Ultimately, Kasuwan-Daji’s raid underscores the persistent threat from armed gangs in northern Nigeria. Residents remain in fear, and urgent action is needed to restore safety.
