Gunmen Kidnap Nigerian Schoolgirls, Kill VP

Gunmen

Gunmen attacked a government girls’ boarding school in Kebbi State, Nigeria, early Monday, killing the vice principal and abducting 25 female students, authorities said. The incident is the latest mass kidnapping in northwest Nigeria.

Attack Details

The assailants, reportedly armed with rifles and using coordinated tactics, stormed Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town around 4 a.m. local time. They engaged police in a brief gunfight before climbing the perimeter fence and seizing the students, said police spokesperson Nafiu Abubakar Kotarkoshi.

Vice Principal Hassan Yakubu Makuku was shot and killed while trying to resist the attackers. Another staff member was injured in the attack.

Search and Rescue Operations

Police, soldiers, and local vigilantes have been deployed to search escape routes and nearby forests. Authorities are conducting a full-scale rescue operation to locate and safely return the kidnapped students.

Recurring Threats in Northwest Nigeria

Northwest Nigeria has experienced repeated school abductions by armed gangs seeking ransom payments, despite government promises to improve security.

The attack echoes past incidents, including the 2014 kidnapping of 270 schoolgirls by Boko Haram in Chibok, northeastern Nigeria. While many of those girls were eventually released or escaped, some have never been recovered.

Officials warn that school security remains a critical issue, with students and staff at risk in regions where armed gangs operate with increasing boldness.
