Graduation Ban Withdrawn After Ministry Intervention
Graduation ban threats at Antigua Girls’ High School have been withdrawn after swift action by the Ministry of Education. Earlier, Principal Rosalind Beazer warned that students who wore hair extensions, braids, weaves, or hair colour would miss graduation. The issue surfaced during a yearbook photo session. At that time, staff sent several students home for non-compliant hairstyles. As a result, the proposed sanction sparked public debate. Many residents described the punishment as excessive.
Soon after, Director of Education Clare Browne addressed the matter on state television. She said denying graduation over a minor infraction would be disproportionate. Therefore, officials arranged a meeting with parents and students. During that meeting, administrators formally withdrew the ban. Consequently, the affected students will now attend the ceremony. However, the school required them to write letters of apology. They must read those letters to administrators and classmates.
Meanwhile, the meeting also addressed other concerns. Some parents alleged that a senior educator ran her hands through students’ hair. A deputy principal denied the claims. Even so, two students reportedly identified the educator. In addition, one parent claimed the school stripped one student of her prefect badge. The same parent said another student was removed from the graduation planning committee.
Despite the controversy, parents expressed relief after the decision. They welcomed the opportunity for their daughters to graduate with their peers. Now, attention shifts to academics. Fifth-form students will begin study leave on April 16. Afterward, they will prepare for the May and June CSEC examinations.
