Gov’t launches Commonwealth People’s Forum, PM Browne calls for cultural renaissance

Gov’t

Gov’t officials in Antigua and Barbuda launched the 2026 Commonwealth People’s Forum on Tuesday.

The event marks the start of a multi-year strategy leading up to the November 2026 summit. Moreover, it highlights the nation’s commitment to integrate civic insight into global policy.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne urged the Commonwealth to move beyond symbolic dialogue. He emphasized leveraging its 2.7 billion people to boost trade and investment. Consequently, he called for economic repositioning and stronger inter-Commonwealth cooperation.

“Smaller, vulnerable countries can benefit from higher-quality, potentially cheaper products,” Browne explained. He also outlined plans for a total cultural renaissance within Antigua and Barbuda.

Additionally, Browne stressed the need for a revitalized creative sector. He said these investments aim to make the Commonwealth more impactful and relevant. In other words, cultural growth must match economic ambition.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Barbuda Affairs E.P. Chet Greene introduced the “Commonwealth Quilt” framework. He described it as a metaphor for collective strength, diversity, and people-centered development. Greene noted that the quilt represents a collaborative effort, not a single initiative.

Furthermore, he emphasized that civil society ensures policies reflect real-life needs. Without active civic participation, Greene warned, ambitions may remain theoretical.

Meanwhile, Dr Clarence Pilgrim, head of the CHOGM 2026 Task Force, confirmed the People’s Forum will remain central to the summit. He said discussions must produce measurable outcomes for citizens across all 56 member states.

“Creative expression must evolve into policy influence. Let’s move beyond dialogue to delivery, beyond aspiration to accountability,” Pilgrim stated.

The government aims to integrate all initiatives into the national development strategy by November 2026. Consequently, this effort will leave a lasting legacy in creative industries, youth empowerment, and economic diversification.

In short, the People’s Forum seeks to combine civic insight, cultural revival, and economic strategy. Moreover, it positions Antigua and Barbuda as a driving force in shaping a more relevant, actionable Commonwealth.
