Governor General Advised to Dissolve Parliament; Elections Imminent

Governor

Governor General Rodney Williams received formal advice from Prime Minister Gaston Browne to dissolve Parliament.

Browne explained he acted under Section 60(1) of the Constitution, which allows the Governor General to follow his counsel.

“I wrote to His Excellency today, advising him,” Browne said, noting this step starts the next electoral phase.

Initially, the government planned to prorogue Parliament immediately. This action could have allowed elections as early as April 17.

However, the Prime Minister delayed the timeline to give the opposition a few extra days to prepare.

“The opposition is not fully ready and lacks a complete slate of candidates,” Browne told Parliament.

He added that colleagues recommended giving the opposition additional time to organize.

Parliament will dissolve by proclamation on April 1 under the revised plan.

The government expects to issue the writ of election either on April 1 or within the following week.

Once the writ is issued, authorities must hold elections within 21 days, likely in late April.

“We will not give the other side more than an extra week,” Browne said firmly.

He confirmed that further letters will provide the official nomination and election dates.

Political parties must now finalize their candidates and launch campaigns immediately.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the government will act transparently while balancing fairness for the opposition.

Observers expect busy political activity, debates, and heightened voter engagement as the election nears.

Officials also stress that all election steps follow legal rules, ensuring an organized process.

Finally, Browne said the government aims to uphold the Constitution while maintaining a fair timeline.
