Government to Subsidize Airfare Between Antigua and Barbuda
Government officials move to subsidize air travel between Antigua and Barbuda to reduce rising ticket costs.
According to Director General for Communications Maurice Merchant, Cabinet approved financial support in principle. The plan aims to lower fares and help travelers.
“Cabinet recognized the urgent need to address high airfare between Antigua and Barbuda,” Merchant said. He added that recent fare hikes and limited flights have affected residents and Barbuda’s economy.
Therefore, the government will act directly. Cabinet expects the subsidy to ease travel costs for residents and visitors.
“An airfare subsidy will provide much-needed relief to travelers and residents on Barbuda,” Merchant said. Officials emphasize that affordable and reliable travel is essential for daily life, business, and access to health services.
“Cheap and dependable air transport is vital for the economy, healthcare access, and overall well-being of Barbudans,” he added.
The government is finalizing the subsidy proposal. Cabinet will review detailed recommendations on its structure and cost. “Mr. Beazer will submit a detailed plan,” Merchant said. “Cabinet will decide on the exact amount.”
Officials also stressed that governments often provide travel subsidies to reduce costs and encourage movement. “Giving a subsidy is not new. Governments use it to help travelers and promote activity,” Merchant explained.
Moreover, the initiative supports broader development goals in Barbuda. Officials argue that stronger connectivity will help the island grow and support residents who travel regularly between Antigua and Barbuda.
The government promises to release more details once Cabinet approves the plan. Residents can soon expect relief from high airfares and better access to essential services.
