Government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved initiatives to preserve the pottery tradition at Seaview Farm.

The decision follows a proposal by Ms. Sharona Burnett, granddaughter of Ms. Hyacinth Hillhouse, the country’s only living traditional potter.

The proposal highlighted the cultural importance of the craft, operational challenges, and the need for national support.

Cabinet recognized Seaview Farm as home to one of the Caribbean’s oldest surviving pottery traditions. It has been passed down for over a century.

Officials emphasized that preserving this craft supports cultural tourism and community-based economic activity.

To ensure continuity, Cabinet assigned three individuals to train in traditional pottery techniques at Seaview Farm.

This initiative will transfer knowledge to a new generation and prevent the craft from being lost.

Cabinet also agreed to provide operational support, including site access, clay extraction, processing, and transportation of materials.

Additional support covers labor for clay preparation, kiln operations, water supply, and fuel for firing.

Moreover, the Ministry of Tourism will collaborate with the pottery owners to produce authentic pottery artifacts.

These items will serve as official gifts and enhance Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural tourism product.

Officials noted this partnership will increase visibility for Seaview Farm pottery and create new community-based economic opportunities.
