Government Moves to Fix DR Travel Issue
Government officials say they will address travel concerns. The issue affects Dominican permanent residents.
Several residents reported trouble re-entering Antigua and Barbuda. They say immigration officers require visas. However, they already hold valid permanent residency.
The concern surfaced during a town hall meeting. The meeting took place in St. John’s Rural South on Thursday night. A resident raised the issue during open discussion.
According to the resident, some Dominican nationals fear travelling home. They worry they cannot return without problems. As a result, many avoid leaving the country.
Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin responded to the concern. He acknowledged what he called a legislative flaw. Therefore, he said the government must act quickly.
Benjamin explained that Cabinet will review the matter. The review is expected at its next meeting. He said officials plan to create a clear policy.
“A lot of persons, my friends from the DR, are afraid to go home,” Benjamin said. He added that residency should mean security. “Once you have residency, you can work. You should also be able to travel,” he stated.
Moreover, Benjamin assured residents that corrective steps will follow. He said several Dominican nationals have already faced difficulty. Consequently, the matter now requires urgent attention.
Permanent residency allows individuals to live and work legally. However, confusion over travel rules has created stress. Many affected residents say they feel uncertain about their status.
In addition, community members want clarity. They believe rules should apply fairly and consistently. Therefore, they welcomed the Attorney General’s response.
The government now aims to remove uncertainty. Officials want residents to travel without fear. At the same time, they seek to ensure immigration laws remain clear.
For now, affected residents await Cabinet’s decision. Meanwhile, the issue highlights broader concerns about policy gaps. As discussions continue, many hope for a swift resolution.
