Government Introduces 24-Hour Child Maintenance Transfers

Government

Government officials are launching a 24-hour transfer system to speed up child maintenance payments.

Mothers complained that funds paid through the courts took too long to reach them. Consequently, families struggled to meet urgent needs.

The issue came up at a town hall on Thursday night in St. John’s Rural South. One mother said her two autistic children needed care, but payments were slow.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin acted on these concerns. He conducted an internal review after repeated complaints.

Permanent Secretary Hildred Simpson met with senior court officials to find the bottleneck. They then designed a new process to fix delays.

“The permanent secretary spoke with the registrar and deputy registrar,” Benjamin explained. “They set up a system where funds move immediately.”

Under the new system, the High Court will send funds to the family court in less than 24 hours. Mothers can now collect payments promptly.

Benjamin said the previous delay caused confusion. Some mothers assumed fathers had not paid, even though funds were lodged but stalled in processing.

The system will also allow mothers to track payments quickly. Therefore, families can trust the child maintenance process more.

Officials plan to start 24-hour transfers soon. Staff will follow the new procedure without delay.

Families affected by slow payments welcomed the change. Many said they feel relief that funds will now reach them on time.

This reform shows the government’s focus on supporting families. It ensures children receive timely financial support.

Officials will monitor the process closely. They will make further improvements if needed. Families can expect faster, smoother payments going forward.

The government emphasizes that this step is only the beginning. Continuous oversight will keep the child maintenance system efficient and fair.
