Good Humans 268 launches 300-stop disability rights ride
Good Humans 268 Inc. is pushing for change with a new islandwide campaign.
Firstly, the group has launched “Ride for a Cause” to spark national attention. The campaign also marks its third anniversary.
Moreover, President Joshuanette Francis says the plan is both bold and symbolic. Her team will complete 300 stationary bike rides. Each ride will last 30 minutes.
In addition, the campaign will reach many public spaces. It will visit 80 schools, 30 beaches, and 13 roundabouts. It will even appear on trucks during Carnival.
As a result, Francis hopes to shift how people view disability. She wants to move from pity to empowerment.
According to the 2011 Census, about 16,000 people live with disabilities locally. These range from mild to severe conditions. Therefore, Francis says the issue affects many families.
However, she stresses that disability is not only about hardship. Instead, she says there is also strength and beauty. Still, she believes attitudes must change.
Furthermore, Francis calls for “golden opportunities” for disabled people. She highlights jobs, transport, and land access.
Notably, her mission is personal. She has fought a legal battle for five years. She says she lost her job due to osteoarthritis.
After that, she claims she was removed from her schedule. She was also offered small settlements. Yet, she insists the fight is about fairness, not money.
Importantly, she points to the 2017 Disability Act. She says the law should protect people from discrimination.
Meanwhile, she shared several troubling stories. For example, a student lacked bathroom access for years. The school facility was not disability-friendly.
Similarly, a man could not attend his own court hearing. The courtroom had no ramp or elevator.
In another case, a police officer needs help getting a prosthetic leg.
Because of this, the campaign uses the bike as a symbol of movement. It also represents action and enforcement.
Finally, the campaign will run through the year, including Christmas. The public can join rides, donate, or share stories.
In conclusion, Francis says real change needs consistency. She believes her team is ready to push until the law is enforced.
