Fort James Eyed for Development as Cruise Arrivals Rise
Fort James has emerged as a potential focus for tourism development as cruise passenger numbers continue to climb.
Plans are now under way to expand tourism infrastructure beyond the port gates. As arrivals increase, pressure has grown on popular beaches near St. John’s.
Gaspar George, General Manager of Antigua Cruise Port and Regional Director at Global Ports Holding, said busy days often strain nearby beaches. Therefore, officials are exploring new tourism spaces.
He explained that beaches close to the port become crowded when multiple ships arrive. Consequently, rising passenger numbers require new opportunities and new avenues for visitors.
“We know there are areas we can partner with,” George said during an interview on Government in Motion. He added that officials want to open new beaches and spread activity more evenly.
Moreover, he said the port plans to work closely with the government and other stakeholders. Together, they aim to develop Fort James as part of a broader strategy.
“We will be working with the government of Antigua and also the people on developing Fort James,” he said. In addition, he stressed the goal is to elevate the visitor experience beyond the port area.
The proposal comes as cruise arrivals trend upward. Officials project close to one million passengers this year. As a result, demand for tours and recreational spaces continues to grow.
Increased home-porting activity has also added to visitor numbers. More passengers now spend time in St. John’s and nearby communities. Therefore, expanded attractions have become more urgent.
Fort James sits just north of the capital. For years, many have viewed it as an underused historic and beach asset.
Port officials say any development would complement existing sites. At the same time, it would ease congestion at beaches that now receive most cruise traffic.
Overall, the plan reflects efforts to manage growth responsibly. By expanding beyond the port gates, officials hope to improve visitor flow while strengthening the island’s tourism product.
