Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Attorney General Sir Gerald Watt, KCN, KC, has died at 86. He passed away on Saturday while receiving medical treatment.

Sir Gerald Watt had a long and distinguished career in public service and law. Over the decades, he shaped Antigua and Barbuda’s legal and political landscape. Moreover, he held key positions that influenced governance and the justice system.

He served as Attorney General, leading national legal reforms, and as chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission, ensuring fair elections. Additionally, he guided the Antigua and Barbuda Bar Association as president, strengthening the country’s legal profession.

Furthermore, Sir Gerald Watt served as Speaker of the House of Representatives for ten years. He resigned in 2024, leaving a legacy of fairness and strong parliamentary leadership. During his tenure, he consistently promoted accountability and dialogue among lawmakers.

As a King’s Counsel, Sir Gerald Watt earned a reputation as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most respected attorneys. He led the law firm Watt, Dorsett, Hewlett Law and mentored countless lawyers.
