Fire at Cook’s Landfill Leaves Area Smouldering

Fire

Fire broke out at the active disposal zone of the Cook’s Sanitary Landfill on Friday evening.

The National Solid Waste Management Authority confirmed the incident in a media release dated 28 February. According to the statement, the blaze began around 18:30 local time on 27 February.

Crews responded quickly to the scene. They worked to extinguish the flames and contain the situation. However, the site continues to smoulder and produce lingering fumes.

As a result, smoke has affected nearby communities. Consequently, air quality in surrounding areas has declined.

The authority thanked government stakeholders, landfill management, and staff for their swift response. Officials said their coordinated efforts helped bring the fire under control.

Nevertheless, the NSWMA apologized to residents for the disruption caused by smoke and poor air quality. In particular, officials acknowledged the inconvenience experienced by those living nearby.

Furthermore, the authority advised residents with respiratory conditions to remain indoors. Alternatively, they should take precautionary measures to protect their health.

The landfill sits near St. John’s in Antigua and Barbuda. Therefore, the incident has drawn attention due to its proximity to populated areas.

Meanwhile, crews continue efforts to fully extinguish the fire. The NSWMA stated that it remains committed to reducing hazardous incidents at the landfill.

In addition, officials said they will maintain monitoring until conditions improve. They aim to prevent further risks and restore normal operations as soon as possible.

Overall, while authorities have contained the blaze, smouldering conditions persist. As a result, residents remain on alert and are urged to follow health guidance.

Through continued response efforts and monitoring, the authority hopes to eliminate remaining hotspots. Ultimately, officials seek to protect both public health and environmental safety as cleanup continues.
