Festival Commission launches Burning Flames Junior Road March

Festival

Festival Commission has launched the first-ever Burning Flames Junior Road March Competition. The initiative aims to support young soca talent in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Antigua and Barbuda Festival Commission introduced the new competition to nurture the next generation of performers. Moreover, the programme highlights youth creativity during the country’s vibrant carnival season.

Importantly, the competition honours the legendary band Burning Flames. The group helped shape the sound of Antiguan Carnival for decades.

Therefore, the new event celebrates their musical legacy. At the same time, it creates a platform for young performers to shine.

The Burning Flames Junior Road March Competition will take place during the Junior Carnival Parade. The parade is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, 2026.

During the parade, judges will assess participants at designated judging points. These points will be located along the official parade route.

The competition welcomes several young performers. For example, Junior Soca artistes can participate. In addition, Junior Calypso artistes can enter the event.

Furthermore, Junior Jam Bands will also compete. As a result, the competition promises energy, creativity, and carnival spirit.

Young performers will compete for attractive cash prizes. First place will receive $2,500.

Meanwhile, the first runner-up will earn $1,500. In addition, the second runner-up will take home $1,000.

Several sponsors are supporting the new initiative. These sponsors include Daryll Matthew.

Support also comes from Elizabeth Makhoul. Additionally, Michael Freeland has contributed to the initiative.

Their involvement highlights a strong commitment to youth development. Moreover, the sponsors want to preserve cultural traditions.

Minister Matthew stressed the importance of investing in young creatives. He said young people represent the future of culture and carnival.

Therefore, the new competition offers an exciting opportunity. Young artistes can showcase their talent while continuing important musical traditions.

Meanwhile, Makhoul praised the impact of Burning Flames on Antiguan music. She noted the band helped shape carnival’s signature sound.

By naming the competition after the band, organisers celebrate that legacy. At the same time, they encourage young artistes to carry the tradition forward.

Ultimately, the Festival Commission hopes the event will inspire young performers. The organisation also wants to strengthen the future of soca music.

Through initiatives like this, youth talent can grow and thrive. Consequently, the musical culture of Antigua and Barbuda will continue to flourish.
