Escalation in the Middle East: Israeli Strikes on Beirut and Closure of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical sea lane for global oil and gas trade, following joint strikes by the U.S. and Israel that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other leaders. This move has sent shockwaves through global energy markets, as nearly a third of the world’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) passes through the strait. The closure threatens to disrupt global supply chains and has already led to a surge in oil prices, raising concerns about inflation and economic stability worldwide.

In response to the killing of Khamenei, Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple neighborhoods in Beirut, Lebanon, early Tuesday, displacing over one million people in just two weeks of fighting. Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes struck residential areas, including an apartment block in the Doha Aramoun area. The escalating conflict has led to widespread displacement and a humanitarian crisis, with Lebanese authorities warning that the situation could worsen if the violence continues.
