Emmanuel Jailed 30 Months for Robbing UK Tourist
Emmanuel will spend 30 months in prison for robbing a British cruise passenger in St. John’s. Moreover, the court noted his history of robbery offences.
Junior Emmanuel of Federation Road received the sentence in the St. John’s Magistrates’ Court. Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel imposed the custodial term. The ruling followed a brazen daylight attack last year.
The court heard that the robbery happened on November 29, 2025. That afternoon, an elderly visitor from the United Kingdom explored the historic streets of St. John’s. Meanwhile, her cruise ship prepared for departure.
Emmanuel targeted the woman near the Cathedral Church. He approached her from behind. Then, he yanked her fanny pack with force. As a result, the strap gave way. The sudden pull threw the pensioner to the ground.
Emmanuel fled with the bag. It contained her travel documents, phone, and cash. The stolen items were valued at about EC$1,400. Therefore, the victim lost important belongings during her shore excursion.
However, help came later that day. A passerby found the discarded fanny pack and passport. The individual ensured the items returned to the tourist’s vessel. Thus, some of her property was recovered.
At the same time, police acted quickly. Officers tracked down Emmanuel within hours. They arrested him that same day. Consequently, he faced charges before the court.
During sentencing, the court considered Emmanuel’s criminal record. He is no stranger to robbery offences. Therefore, the magistrate imposed a 30-month prison term.
Emmanuel will serve two years and six months behind bars. In addition, the court will deduct time already spent in custody. He has been on remand since early December.
The case highlights swift police action and court response. It also underscores the risks faced by visitors during shore excursions. Now, Emmanuel begins his prison sentence for the violent robbery in the capital.
